Yagan Square Play Space

A hidden play area in one of Perth's favourite public spaces.

Yagan Square is a public space located between the Perth CBD and Northbridge, and like many of Perth’s public places, has a play area for the kids. Surrounded by transport links and cafes, it is easy to get to and convenient for food and drink options.

I took my two girls, aged 5 and 3, along for a play on a warm Spring weekend. The play area is somewhat hidden up on a hill, overlooking Yagan Square. There is a winding path leading up to the play space just to the right of the bronze statue Wirin, which you can’t really miss. There is also elevator access from the Market Hall.

Before making our way up to the playground, we stopped at the one of the many Market Hall eateries and grabbed a coffee, babycino and a banana bread for a mid morning snack.

The play area isn’t massive, but it has plenty to keep younger children entertained for a morning or afternoon. We visited on a sunny morning, so shady space was prime real estate. We sat on the artificial lawn but had to periodically move into the shade as the morning wore on.

The play area feature plenty of things to climb on and up and crawl through, such as ropes, mounds and tunnels. There is also a couple of slides, communication tubes, plus telescopes and kaleidoscopes for the kids to look through. The play space surface is made of soft rubber, so may get hot in summer.

The interactive water feature is a big drawcard for families, especially during the warmer months. It is open from 10am-6pm, however is closed on Wednesdays. Children will need to wear a swim nappy if they are not toilet trained.

Being a ‘rooftop’ playground, the space provides plenty of opportunities for children and adults to look out over Yagan Square and Northbridge.

There are public toilets on site, plus baby change facilities. There is also drinking water available at the play space.

Yagan Square Play Space is a great little play area for younger children, and is worth a look if you are visiting the Perth CBD. Just remember to take a hat, shoes, sunscreen and swim nappies if needed.
