When you suggest taking the kids for ice-cream, you’re probably thinking of a generic Mr Whippy, or a scoop of something the colour of an atomic rainbow and tasting like last week’s fairy floss.
You’re probably not thinking of $15 dessert creations that start with a doughnut and end with a pile of brownie bites. Or a $20 milkshake that starts with the milkshake and ends with a cronut perched on top.
If you do decide to take the kids to Whisk Creamery in Subiaco, then either be prepared to have them on a sugar high all day, or make them share. With you preferably, because the elaborate concoctions to be found in Whisk are definitely special-occasion territory.
You can choose from their own sumptuous creations or you can design your own, but either way with bases made from cronuts, doughnuts, choux puffs, meringues or puff pastry ice cream cones, filled with house-made gelato flavours, and then topped with a tempting range of extras including shards of chocolate, cookies, caramel popcorn and hot fudge you are definitely in for a feast.
I Eat Milkshakes
If you’re trying to find something smaller for the little people in your life, you should avoid the $19.90 ‘I Eat Milkshakes’ (a mason jar full of choc and blueberry milkshake, then topped with a cronut, fresh cream, brownie pieces and cookies) and request a $7.40 classic milkshake with flavours such as ivory coast chocolate, burnt vanilla, Italian hazelnut, salted caramel, banana, strawberry, raspberry, or mango.
Or, more likely – try one of the desserts.
The smallest of the desserts is the $8.60 Cremino Cone (a waffle cone with hazelnut gelato, burnt vanilla gelato, dark chocolate dip, milk chocolate shards and chocolate and almond cookies). At the other end of the scale is the $15.4 Tom & Berry’s (a choux puff, wildberry compote, vanilla gelato, wild berry sorbet, fresh cream, strawberry coulis and finished with a white chocolate and strawberry macaron).
The staff seem willing to make small changes to their creations if you request, such as switching fresh cream to marshmallows, or omitting nuts.
Other fun desserts the kids will enjoy include the Charlie Brown ($13.4) which comes in a choux puff with hot fudge, choc mousse, marshmallows and brownies or the caramel sandwich ($12.8) a cronut with salted caramel gelato, caramel sauce and fresh cream.
If these all sound ‘too much’ for your small child, then you can create your own, whether it is as simple as a scoop of gelato in a cup or something a little more elaborate.
Start by choosing a base including cronuts, pavlova meringues, doughnut cones or simply a waffle cone or paper cup. The bases come with a price tag which also dictates how many flavours of gelato you can have.
Then you select from eight flavours of gelato, the most simple being burnt vanilla or Ivory Coast chocolate (others include cheesecake and salted caramel).
To finish, select from the 60 cent toppings (such as M&Ms, cookies, meringues, caramel popcorn and Graham crackers), the $1 toppings (such as chocolate or caramel sauces, fudge or passionfruit curd) or a ‘special’ such as a macaron, cheesecake or brownie bites, fresh strawberry or melted chocolate.
Everything is made on site including the gelato as well as the cronuts, sauces and pavlova meringue bases. Service is quick and friendly, and you will have your feast without much waiting.
All desserts come in a paper bowl, which is useful if you want to take-away but it is probably recommended you stay and eat at the Creamery, and whiles seating is limited, you can choose from outdoor tables on Rokeby, perch at a small bar or try and nab one of the inside tables.
