Welcome To My Suburb is a new series of articles by Perth Mums Group that looks at a number of Perth suburbs in depth, and provides various information including schools, health and fitness and shopping.
This week we've headed just south of the city to Booragoon, a leafy suburb located in the City of Melville that has excellent public transport links to the CBD, a top-quality shopping centre and heaps of fitness facilities. Here's our look at Booragoon.
Surrounding suburbs: Alfred Cove, Applecross, Ardross, Attadale, Bateman, Bicton, Brentwood, Bull Creek, Kardinya, Leeming, Melville, Mount Pleasant, Murdoch, Myaree, Palmyra, Willagee, Winthrop.

Public transport Booragoon is serviced by a good public transport network from the Booragoon Bus Station and the nearby Bull Creek Train Station, which is on the Mandurah line. Bull Creek is a 10 minute train ride to the city and about 40 minutes to Mandurah.
Schools and Childcare Primary Schools: While Booragoon itself doesn’t boast a huge range of primary or high schools – the only school in the suburb is Booragoon Primary School, there are lots of schools dotted around the surrounding suburbs.

High School: Booragoon’s nearest public high school is my old stomping ground – Applecross Senior High School. For a list of public high schools and primary schools, see the Department of Education website.
Health The nearest public hospital is Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch. FSH has an emergency department and a children’s emergency department, plus a maternity and labour wing. The nearest private service is St John of God Murdoch.
Shopping To outsiders, Booragoon is probably best known for being home to one of the largest shopping centres in Perth, Garden City Shopping Centre, which has a Coles, Woolworths, Myer, David Jones and K-Mart, plus lots of specialty shops, telco providers, banks and two food courts, plus lots of cafes dotted throughout the centre. Garden City also has a Hoyts Cinema, which runs ‘Prams At The Pix’ on Wednesday mornings during school terms, in which parents can take babies and toddlers to the cinema for a designated screening of the latest movies - you'll even enjoy discounted ticket prices. Bonus!
In nearby Myaree, just a few minutes drive from Booragoon, there are a number of large baby stores, PetBarn and several furniture stores, plus lots more.
Community Services There is a free Justice of the Peace service at Garden City Shopping Centre, located just next to the Post Office. You’ll find the Civic Square Library and the City of Melville administration building located within the Garden City complex. There’s also a Medicare branch. In the neighbouring suburb of Brentwood there is the Blue Gum Recreation Centre, which runs various community events and programs for adults and children.
