Thank you so much for having me. I’m Lauren McKellar author of The Calendar Mums.

The Calendar Mums is a book about a group of women in a mothers’ group. On paper, all they have in common is the date they conceived - but they soon prove that being a mum can unite even the most different people.

When their mothers’ group meeting space is taken away, the women band together to raise money and reinstate the service. What better way to do that than by shooting a calendar featuring themselves - in the nude?

This book is all about motherhood; the joys, the challenges, and the heartache. While there’s a lot of humour and light in the story, just like true motherhood, it also touches on some difficult issues: loss of identity, perinatal anxiety, infant loss and, as is the experience of so many Australian women, abuse.

It’s heartbreaking that, on average, one woman is killed every nine days by a current or former partner (OurWatch.org. au) . On top of that, women are at increased risk of experiencing violence from an intimate partner during pregnancy - and leaving is never easy.

The Calendar Mums does talk about abuse, but it also talks about joy. It talks about love, community and the unbreakable bonds we can forge through motherhood. I hope this book makes you smile and swoon and groan, that it makes you feel empowered and seen as a mother and/or a woman.
