Ahhhh Scitech – who didn’t love running around Perth’s favourite museum on a school excursion or on the weekend? Scitech is the premier museum for children, and the exhibits, displays and galleries have been designed largely with their learning needs in mind, but there’s also an emphasis on making science fun! If you haven’t been since primary school, or just haven’t been since having children, here’s 10 reasons to love Scitech.

1. Toddlerfest

Toddlerfest is Scitech’s bi-annual event just for the youngest members of the family. It is an exciting, stimulating place of discovery aimed specifically at children aged 2 to 5 years and features various themes with interactive, hands on activities and interactive shows. The next Toddlerfest takes place from 10 – 25 February and you can read more here.

2. Playgroup and Mums Group Visits…

Got a playgroup or mums group and need places to go? Scitech welcomes you! Playgroups and mothers’ group bookings are available for $6.50 per person, with a minimum spend of $97.50 required. This includes access to Scitech’s exhibition galleries, entry to Discoverland and a private, interactive puppet show. This offer is only available during the school term, and bookings are essential. Children under 4 years are free entry.

3….Or they can come to you!

Scitech can bring the science to your playgroup or out of hours school care – they can even visit libraries, shopping centres, and community events!

They will bring their unique mobile program designed to encourage adults and young children to play, explore and discover together. The program is designed for children up to kindergarten age, who will be shown how to use their senses to understand the world around them and learn how they are discovering science every day in a safe and interactive environment.

4. Children’s Parties

It’s a birthday party with a difference – suitable for children aged between 4 and 12 years, a Scitech party includes two dedicated hosts, provate room hire, unlimited access to Scitech before and after the party (during business hours) plus a theatre or puppet show. Parties are 90 minutes in duration and are available at four time slots during the day. Decorations are included and each guest will receive engaging, take home activities after the party. There are two styles to choose from – Science Workshop and Self-Catered. Pricing is $25 per child for a minimum of 15 children, with free entry for one adult per child guest. You can read more here.

5. Planetarium and Puppet Gallery

Watch fascinating science presentations on the giant, 180 degree dome with impressive surround sound and laser projection, all from the comfort of a reclining seat! Shows and topics change on a regular basis and entry is included with your admission fees (unfortunately children under 4 years not permitted in the Planetarium.)

If you do have younger children aged 3 to 7 years, bring them along to The Puppet Theatre, a space to learn about science through simple story telling and puppetry. There are various show times daily and last for between 20 to 30 minutes – perfect for the littlies! No booking required and entry is included with your admission fee.

6. Exhibits and galleries

Scitech is home to a number of permanent and temporary exhibits, including Waterlandia, an interactive multimedia exhibit aimed at helping children discover how the water cycle works by drawing, erasing and directing water flow on the huge touch screen display. A popular permanent display is Discoverland for children aged 3 to 7 years and includes lots of hands-on activities and exhibits, plus a construction zone in which children can have a go at building and engineering. Scitech also has temporary exhibits running throughout the year, all of which explore space, technology and innovation.

7. Range of at home learning activities

Scitech has a range of activities that the kids can do at home – the current activities are based around forensic science, and use forensic techniques to investigate crimes. Activities can be downloaded here and there are videos to show the kids what to do.

8. Memberships

If you and your children just love Scitech, why not invest in an annual membership? Simply pay one annual fee and visit as many times as you like in 12 months. They are great value and are priced at just $35 for children aged between 4 and 15 years and $55 for adults and teens aged 16 and over. Children under 4 are free.

Membership to Scitech entitles you to unlimited free entry to Scitech, Discovery Shop discounts, exclusive members-only events, program discounts and more! The annual fee also includes free entry into a range of other Australian science centres, including Scienceworks in Melbourne and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

Keen to keep the kids learning when they get home? Scitech’s Discovery Shop stocks a huge range of books, experiment kits, games, modelling kits and plenty of other things for families and teachers, and there’s something for all budgets. They also sell gift vouchers! You don’t need to buy an admission ticket to Scitech to visit The Discovery Shop.

10. Adults Only Nights

Need a night away from the kids? Scitech’s ‘After Dark’ events are a night out with a difference – learn about science while having a sneaky beverage! Over 18s only, so leave the kids at home for this one.
