Unfortunately Target Cafes have now closed permanently.

Since becoming a work-from-home mum, I try and get out of the house at least once a day with my 12-month old daughter Olivia. This usually means a trip to the park, library or to our local shopping centre . Lately, I’ve been on the hunt for cheap eats while we’re out and about, just to mix up the drudgery of my home cooked meals every now and again.

This week we visited the Target Café, located within Target at Cockburn Gateways Shopping Centre. With a range of kids sandwiches and snacks for under $3, they’re ok with me, especially given most of Olivia’s food ends up on the floor, so the cheaper the better.

The Target Cafe is located....in Target.

I ordered a vegemite sandwich for Olivia and a Devonshire Tea for myself. The sandwich, complete with crusts cut off, was $2.90. The only problem with the kids meals is that they don’t have them advertised around the café and I had to ask what choices they offer. In fact, it was a friend who told me about the cheap eats in the first place.

I asked about the other meals available, and the café sells a kids size portion of wedges for $2.90 and kids’ pizza for $3.90. They also offer free babychinos, which are great for keeping little people occupied for a few minutes while you savour that sweet, sweet caffeine – I mean, coffee.

The Devonshire Tea is a popular choice.

The Devonshire Tea is $7.50, which includes two tasty scones, jam and cream and a regular tea or a coffee, although I opted to upgrade to a large mug of coffee for an extra dollar. A regular coffee by itself will set you back $3.60, while the mug is $4.50, which are very reasonable prices in the centre.

Olivia loves vegemite sandwiches...but she also loves throwing her food on the floor.

As well as Devonshire Teas, Target Café sells a range of sandwiches, pastries, pies, muffins and biscuits, as well as juices, milkshakes and thickshakes.

Each time I’ve been there the service has been good, with friendly staff who seem to like interacting with children. At the Cockburn café, there are high chairs available. It’s worth a look if you’re after a quick, cheap snack for younger kids.

You can buy a range of snacks and drinks during a break from your shopping.

The café opening hours correspond with the store opening times.
