The Swan Valley is very much open for business this Easter long weekend so why not bundle the kids into the car and take a tour of the area? In case you haven’t had enough chocolate already, there are sweet treats around every corner and the Swan Valley boasts two huge chocolate factories brimming with bunnies and eggs! Here’s our top tips on family friendly places to try:

Whistlers Chocolate Factory

This is one of our favourite Swan Valley places to play. This former garden centre is still a bit of a hidden gem - once you safely negotiate your way through the chocolate shop, there’s a huge grassy garden out back with two enormous shaded sandpits, a chalk board and a nature playground.

There’s free chocolate samples for everyone (usually a chocolate pretzel, chocolate liquorice and coconut rough) as well as plenty of chocolatey choices on the cafe menu. We love the chocolate fondue - choose strawberries for a healthy balance! The lunch menu is great value too, and there’s a nice selection of local gifts for sale including some lovely childrens toys. You can read the Perth Mums Group review here .

Margaret River Chocolate Factory

More free chocolate samples here - choose from dark, milk or white chocolate drops which the kids will love! In the cafe, the babycinos also come with chocolate drops on the side! The gift shop area is enormous and outside there’s a big grassy area for little ones to stretch their legs.

For an added adventure, check out the Swan Valley Wagon Tours which stop off directly opposite the Margaret River Chocolate Factory (bookings recommended).

Maison St Honore

Sweet treats abound at this French style cafe and patisserie. Choose from house made pastries and croissants or indulge in the vast array of macarons. The huge play frame is great fun for the kids and there’s plenty of space to run around.

Fresh fruit and veggies

For healthier options, check out the huge variety of fresh produce stalls set up by growers in the area. Head North on West Swan Road from Guildford and get the kids to keep their eyes peeled for stalls set up in the shade by the roadside. Opening times and availability does vary from stall to stall, but that's all part of the adventure. Mangoes, melons and grapes are still in season and many vendors are happy to offer free tastings to kids.

We love the homemade watermelon slushies at The Grape Place in Caversham (889 West Swan Road) but they are only open on Easter Monday. Boo.

For probably the biggest selection of really fresh local produce, you can’t do better than CPL Fresh on West Swan Road (opposite Mash Brewery). The stall holder, Peter, affectionately known by locals as “Mr Happy”, is super nice and always offers my kids a free piece of fruit. And he’s open every day of the long Easter weekend.
