A unique birthday party idea for Perth tweens.
Things have changed since we were kids, and whether or not you may harbour a secret desire for the simplicity of our own childhoods, few adults would
not go weak at the knees at the sight of these beautifully decorated tents for a slumber party.
My eight year old daughter had the recent good fortune of being able to host a sleepover party with
Sweet Dreams and Goodnight Slumber Parties , the original slumber party company in Perth.
We cleared out the family room, found a stack of DVDs and broke out the popcorn in anticipation of the tents arriving.
A basic package from Sweet Dreams and Goodnight costs $200 and includes five tents plus a list of extras including air mattresses, sheets, doonas, fairy lights and decorations, tray tables and a special Sleepover Pack for each child which has a toothbrush, face-washer, slippers and eye mask that the kids can keep.
The Sleepover Pack is yours to keep
The tray tables (perfect for doing craft or breakfast the next morning) are neatly set up with the new toothbrush and face washer rolled into a little cup, and an electric night lamp for each child.
The effect is stunning.
You can add on extra tents for $40 each and there are a range of colours available – including tents for boys.
The photo booth backdrop
Sweet Dreams and Goodnight also offer a host of optional extras including a photo booth ($30 hire) which includes a backdrop, frames, and huge box of dress-ups and funky accessories. The girls loved the photo booth, and this is definitely good value – and the perfect way to send a message to the other parents that everything is going well.
The photo booth and props will keep kids amused for hours
You can also choose from a range of craft packs, all created by Sweet Dreams and Goodnight owner Mel Jacobs. You can choose from bracelet kits ($30 makes five bracelets) which are perfect for younger kids, dream-catcher kits ($30 each) recommended for older kids, and pillow-decorating packs ($15) which are suitable for all ages.
Making a dream catcher
The dream-catcher kits are beautifully packaged and contain a ring, washi take, beads, feathers and a large assortment of fancy ribbons and wools, so that each child can personalise their own dream-catchers, and hang them from their tents.
Other party packs include the glow pack ($20 each) which include glow in the dark lipstick and nail polish and a neon jewellery making kit; the adventure pack ($15 each) with torch, survival pack and adventure hunt kit; and a spa pamper pack ($20 each) with all the goodies necessary for little princesses to do their manis and pedis.
A box of retro games ($20) which has classics such as Twister, Charades, Bingo and Elastics is an option for older kids or wet-weather parties where the kids won’t be able to get outside.
Based in Ballajura, you can collect the tents and extras yourself – but you will need a fair amount of space in your car. The tents are all handmade by Mel and are made from solid wood and hand sewn fabrics. They are relatively straightforward to assemble but do require some time and common sense.

However, for an $80 fee, Mel will deliver all the tents, set them up, blow up the air mattresses, make the beds and set up the tray tables. And then come back the following day to take it away. It is definitely worth the extra cost, and I was surprised at just how much there was and the effort she put into setting everything up perfectly. Allow at least 30-40 minutes for set up and packing away.
Depending on the space available, the tents can be set up in a curving line (great if you’re planning a movie night) or facing each other (great for midnight D&Ms).
Coming later in 2016 will be an outdoor movie night pack – which will have all the basics mentioned above, but will also include an outdoor screen, movie projector and popcorn machine (price TBA).
Based on the squeals of excitement when people arrived at the party, the slumber tents were something special that people will reminisce about for a long time (and that was just the mums). The kids had a ball and it was certainly a night to remember.
