Women’s Health Physiotherapy services for all ages and stages of life
Suite 4 St John of God Medical Clinic, 100 Murdoch Drive
Murdoch, Western Australia 6150
For over 20 years, Southcare has provided physiotherapy services to St John of God Murdoch Hospital since it first opened in 1994.
Practice Principal Tony Cacho leads a highly experienced and dedicated team of health professionals to offer a wide range of services including physiotherapy, post-operative rehabilitation, continence and pelvic health physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and Clinical Pilates classes.
Importantly, Southcare Lifecare Physiotherapy caters for everyone, no matter what age or stage of life they are at.
While pelvic floor issues such as incontinence are common, there is lots of evidence for how pelvic floor physiotherapy can help to completely resolve incontinence (in some cases within 3 months), so don’t put up with it!
Risk factors for pelvic floor weakness that contribute to pelvic floor weakness (please delete ‘the following problems’) include:
Pregnancy (it doesn’t matter if you had a C-section or vaginal birth!)
Giving birth to a baby over 4kgs
Repetitive straining (constipation issues/straining on the toilet, repetitive heavy lifting, repetitive straining from high-level core exercise)
Being overweight
Complicated vaginal birth (using forceps, or having sustained a tear or episiotomy, or a quick pushing phase under 10 minutes, or a long pushing phase over 1.5-2hours)
Available Services:
Continence and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
The dedicated women’s health physiotherapists can help with assessing pelvic floor muscles to ensure you have the correct technique and prescribe an individualised pelvic floor exercise program that is suited to you.
A range of issues can be treated including incontinence, bladder and bowel issues, prolapse, pelvic pain, rectus abdominus diastasis (abdominal separation), pregnancy/postnatal aches and pains, breastfeeding issues (such as nipple pain & blocked ducts/mastitis), haemorrhoids and perineum pain.
6 week Postnatal Check - What to Expect:
A 6-week postnatal check is highly recommended for every woman who has given birth, whether via c-section or a vaginal birth.
As part of the check we assess pelvic floor to check that your technique is correct - research shows that 50% of women who are told verbally to do pelvic floor are actually doing it incorrectly, which can worsen problems. We then prescribe an individual pelvic floor program to suit you, which is progressed to help you reach your goals.
We check the rectus abdominus diastasis (RAD)/abdominal separation to ensure it is on track to closing appropriately and offer guidance and prescribe rehab exercises if it is not healing as expected.
We check your bladder and bowels are recovering and functioning as expected.
We check what your long-term exercise goals are, and make a plan to slowly and safely help you return to your exercise goals, whatever level that may be.
