Sometimes when you want to take your kids out for lunch or dinner, it’s a matter of convincing them that something on the menu is just for them. For some kids it’s chicken nuggets, for others it is spaghetti. I should point out at this stage, that Piggy Food Co has neither of these on their tiny menu. But what they do have is ice-cream sandwiches.

These are the ice-cream sandwiches you may have seen filling up your Facebook feed recently after they were used as the main image on an article about ‘ Perth Desserts Bucket List ’. Enticing in their simplicity (no foams or microherbs here), they are simply a generous layer of yummy flavoured ice-cream wedged between two chocolate chip cookies. Kids (and parents) will love them.

Located on the strip in North Fremantle, it’s easy to find and easy to park in the surrounds streets and carparks. Open for lunch on weekends and dinner Thursday to Sunday, Piggy Food Co is not billed as family-friendly as such (there are no kids corners or colouring-in) but there are large picnic tables on plastic grass, a high chair or two, and plenty of space for prams inside.

The menu at Piggy Food Co is Southern Californian bar food with ingredients such as slaw, chipotle, pulled pork, chicken wings and tacos. It’s fresh and flavourful – but the chipotle is mild and kids will like it (or ask for it on the side).

There are three main options: burgers, tacos and salads, with tacos the cheapest (and smallest). There are six flavours (pulled pork, chicken, haloumi, fried avocado, baja fish and prawns) costing $7 or $8 each. They are not very big, and perfectly sized for kids. Adults might want a couple plus a side of chips ($7) or grilled corn ($5).

Also on the menu are rolls and burgers ($14-$20), some slaw-based salads ($12), hot wings ($10) and the Hog Fries – which are basically loaded fries with pulled pork, cheese, salsa, BBQ sauce and sour cream. Kids will love them.

And then there are the ice-cream sandwiches, with two (or more) flavours that change daily and at a very reasonable $7, are tasty and generous. It will take kids a while to get through them and flavours include macadamia/caramel, coconut/honey, salted caramel and chocolate fudge.

Everything else is minimal. Service is friendly, but you need to order at the bar. The drinks menu is actually six cans and bottles lined up along the counter (fizzy water, ginger beer and some softies, $4 each) or you can BYO beer and wine if you remember. Water is self-service. There are toilets out the back but no change facilities. Bring something to amuse the kids, get them an ice-cream sandwich and settle in for a tasty lunch.
