I've finally embraced the meal delivery service with a local company using local produce.
Iím not exactly known for my cooking talents, but I do at least try to conjure up tasty, healthy meals for my two children. And then watch on as they go uneaten. My meals just never seem to turn out quite right.
Needless to say, dinnertime is not my favourite time of day, so I have finally decided to try a meal-planning and delivery service. My extremely busy older sister has been using one for some time and swears by it, telling me it helps take the pressure off dinner time, cuts down on the anxiety over what to cook every night to keep everyone happy and to reduce those hideous trips to the shops with two children!
Schoolís back for 2020! That means the big kids are starting a brand new year, and the little kids get mum or dad all to themselves once again!
So I went with My Foodie Box, a small, Perth company serving up fresh meals from Bayswater.
If you are not familiar with the concept of meal kits, itís fairly simple. Just head to the website, select your plan, pick your meals, get the box delivered and cook! You can choose from the Classic Box, Family Box, Mystery Box and Vegan Box. Being a family of two adults and two children, the Family Box was our go-to.
Our box was delivered when they said it would be and left in a cool spot at the front of the house. Our first meal was the honey-glazed pork with crushed potatoes. Iím pretty sure Iíve never cooked anything with the words Ďhoney-glazedí in the title before.
I went with this choice because my kids love pork and it is one of the few foods they tend to really enjoy. But would they actually try this new meal, let alone eat it? We would soon find out!
The Mandurah Crochet Club meets weekly to learn crochet, meet other Mandurah mums, and have a good chat. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, everyone is welcome to come along!
Everything you need for each meal is packed in an insulated box with ice packs for the meat. Every meal comes with an instruction card and pre-portioned ingredients to help minimise waste (a huge problem in my family!) You may need a couple of pantry staples such as salt, pepper and oil but everything else is provided.
Once you open the box, you may stand and look at it for a moment like I did, frozen in anxiety. Could I really do this? How would it turn out? Itís not like your average recipe - there are pictures and really detailed instructions - seriously, I couldnít muck this up, could I?
As it turns out, NO! I didnít muck it up and it was ridiculously easy to follow the instruction card. All I had to do was wash, peel and chop or crush the vegetables, chop the meat, thicken the sauce in a pan and chuck it all together.
So I served it up and here came the moment of truth. I was amazed as my dad, who has been staying with us, practically inhaled every last bite and my 3.5 year old ate just about everything on the plate. Even my 20 month old had a good crack.
Wow. My dad said it was very tasty and I certainly didnít leave anything on my plate. There was more than enough to go around.
Tonight we are having beef steak and roasted veggie salad with chimichurri dressing. We shall see how my cooking skills fare with this one!
Each card tells you how long each meal with take and the level of difficulty. If youíre concerned about the amount of packaging My Foodie Box uses with their pre-portioned ingredients - donít be! Everything is recyclable! Some things can be put into your recycle bin, and others returned to them in your My Foodie Box when they drop off your next box.
There are no lock-in contracts and you can cancel or change your plan at any time. If you want fresh, local produce delivered to your door, a way to reduce food waste and a sure-fire way to take the pressure off at dinner time, give My Foodie Box a try!
