Buffets are always a great option when taking the kids out for dinner. It’s a safe bet that even the fussiest of kids will find something they like, and even if they’re averse to trying new things – there is always the desert buffet.



Japanese is now very much part of the typical Aussie diet – and even kids will rattle of the names of dishes such as sushi, teriyaki and tempura.

This is why Kumagoro, an all you can eat Japanese buffet in the Western suburbs, is a good option for families. There is a large range of dishes (over fifty) with many kid-friendly options, and if that fails, there is a freezer full of icecream.

One problem with Kumagoro is that there is a fixed price for kids – whether they are three or eleven, all kids are 50% of the adult price: so $14.95 on Mondays to Thursdays, and $19 on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. That’s a lot of money for a three year old who only eats a bowl of steamed rice and two bowls of icecream with marshmallows.

However, if you child has a half decent appetite, then the price may well end up being a good deal.



Kumagoro is not fancy, but it provides good, fresh food – and lots of it. The food is recognisable and accessible and nicely presented. Children love being able to serve their own dinner, and the bite-size nature of many of the dishes will appeal to kids of all ages.



There are many dishes that are favourites of children, including various types of sushi, spring rolls, vegetable tempura, teriyaki chicken, beef stir fry as well as steamed rice and soup. Of course, if you have adventurous eaters then they have the whole buffet to choose from. The menu changes slightly ever night and while there is plenty of choice for the average diner, there is not a lot in the way of dishes for vegetarians.

Also good for families is the fact that they open early at 5.30pm and while it is relatively quiet early on, by 6.30pm the restaurant is full. You pay for your food when you arrive, and drinks are paid for separately at the end of the night.

Jugs of water are available for free, but all other drinks (from their very limited wine menu) are available from the bar. The drinks menu consists of four wines, three beers, one sake, two juices and some soft drinks. Prices are reasonable and on Friday and Saturday nights, the cost of the buffet includes free beer (Kingway Lager). Not for the kids.



While adults might not be overly impressed, the dessert bar will prove a favourite with kids with its platters of freshly cut fruit, bowls of chewy jelly cubes and an entire freezer of pre-scooped icecream. Kids can then add their choice of toppings plus marshmallows and wafers.

Immediately outside the restaurant is a brand new, soft fall playground, perfect for kids to play while their parents finish eating (you can see through the glass windows or take turns eating and child minding)



Dining mid-week is much cheaper than dining on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday ($29.90 compared to $38 for adults) but free beer is included on those nights.

Kumagoro is located at the northern end of the Floreat Forum, near to the Cambridge Library. There is lots of free parking in the multi-storey carpark. Reservations – especially for weekends – is recommended and can easily be done online via the contact page.
