I love my daughter to the end of the earth and back, but I love her just that little bit more after an afternoon away from her. One of my favourite indulgent, child-free pastimes is enjoying a spot of high tea – tucking into tasty savouries and decadent sweets while sipping on delicious teas.
Café at the Hyatt in Perth offers an Australian High Tea sitting on Saturday and Sunday afternoons – to say that the Café is a magnificent setting for the afternoon is an understatement. With gorgeous décor, delicate table settings and even live, classic music playing on a piano, the Hyatt makes for a lovely afternoon of treats and sophistication.
The tablewear is absolutely gorgeous – the tea cups and saucers, along with the pink champagne flutes – were designed by Australian model Miranda Kerr for Royal Doulton. We started with a pot of tea for the table before the sweets and savouries were served.

We tucked into the savouries first, including little Asian-inspired pastries with a delicious sauce. The bottom tier of our stand was also filled with roast beef wraps, plus there was an extra plate for additional, open-faced sandwiches. There were plenty of savouries to go around before we moved onto the sweets.
The top two tiers of our high tea stand was dedicated to the sweet side. From light, fluffy scones with jam and cream, to macaroons and delicious little cakes, plus biscuits and fruit, it was a dessert-lovers delight.
I would have liked another serving of tea during our high tea. While one was enough (who am I kidding – one cup of tea is never enough) a second cup each would have been lovely while we enjoyed the sweets. A second pot may not have been included in the price and in our gas-bagging, sugar-induced haze we didn’t think to ask until it was time to go.
Café at the Hyatt serves Australian High Tea every Saturday and Sunday between 12pm and 3pm. For $60 per person, it’s not a cheap way to indulge, but you can find deals for almost half price online. Bookings are essential. Children are welcome but for a truly indulgent experience, leave the kids with grandma.
High Tea at Café at the Hyatt is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with great friends. If you’re in need of some time away from the kids or a good old chinwag with a couple of friends, this is a lovely high tea experience filled with sweets, savouries and oodles of sophistication.
