My 9yo son used to be excited about sports like soccer and basketball. He then told me he no longer has interest in these sports, which was fine with me... until he said it was because his friends don't let him play with them anymore. They purposely exclude him and it is heartbreaking. According to his teacher, he now acts out in class so that he can get a recess detention to avoid having to be around his friends. He doesn't get invited to play dates and most birthday parties. The "friends" who are excluding him are the ones he thought were his best friends. What would you do? Do you speak to the teacher/school? I'd hate to be a helicopter parent and maybe this builds his resilience, but it breaks my heart to see him change his personality and become introverted at school and angry at home, when he used to be a confident, happy boy.
