Becoming a parent doesn’t mean you are handed a guidebook and a sudden PhD in Understanding Kids 101. Parenting is hard and sometimes we all need a little bit of help – whether it is trying to get our new baby to sleep, stopping our two year old’s tantrums or dealing with self-esteem issues of our teenagers.
Luckily in Perth, we have a number of not-for-profit and Government agencies dedicated to helping parents. Below is a list of organisations who offer free parenting courses and classes as well as a sample of the programs they offer and how to find them.

All of Ngala’s parenting workshops are free, and they are offered regularly and in a number of different locations including Butler, Kensington, Noranda and Belmont. The courses are popular and need to be booked in advance.

Better Health Program
The Better Health Program is a new government initiative to help children aged seven to 13 whose BMI puts them above a healthy weight to adopt long-lasting health lifestyles. Operating for ten weeks (during school terms), the programs teaches kids and their families a number of skills including healthy eating habits, fitness, self-esteem, teamwork and overall health.
The locations of the programs depend on local demand and the two hour program (twice a week for ten weeks) includes an hour of interactive discussions and activities about nutrition and healthy choices and an hour of physical activities and games. While the kids are playing games, the parents/carers have a group discussion about topics relevant to parents.

The Bump WA
While most courses and workshops offered by The Bump do have a cost attached to them, they offer a special two hour free course titled Choices in Childbirth. The Bump WA is a government funded, not-for-profit organisation that offers pregnancy classes, lactation advice and post-natal support.
The Choices in Childbirth course is to help parents-to-be understand their options such as where to have your baby, what sort of birth experience do you want and what the pros and cons of different care options. As they say: "If you don't know your options, you don't have any."
