FitRight is a range of pregnancy and postnatal fitness classes developed by Perth mum, Women’s Health Physiotherapist and Pilates instructor Taryn Watson. Exercises incorporate the use of fitballs, resistance bands and hand weights, which are all provided. All classes are pelvic floor friendly and lead by physiotherapists. This means that you may be entitled to receive a rebate if you have private health insurance covering physiotherapy. Classes are held once a week for a six week block and are held in multiple locations both north and south of the river.

Bump&Me pregnancy fitness classes are recommended for pregnant women during their second and third trimesters, however, the classes are suitable at any stage of pregnancy. You do not need prior experience in Pilates as all levels of fitness and Pilates experience are catered for. You will need to obtain clearance from the health professional who is taking care of you during your pregnancy (GP, obstetrician and/or midwife) before you commence.

You will also need an initial assessment completed either during a FitRight PregEd workshop or an individual assessment completed by a Women’s Health Physiotherapist. Classes run for an hour and feature Pilates-style exercises with a focus on pelvic floor activation, stretching, toning, posture, breathing and relaxation. A pregnancy Pilates DVD is also available to purchase through the FitRight website to continue your workouts at home, or for those whose schedules are not compatible with attending a class.

Mums and Bubs Fitness Classes are a perfect option for new mums looking for a way to exercise with their baby other than pushing a pram! Community volunteers (who all have a Working with Children Check) look after the babies while the mums exercise right next to them. This minimises separation anxiety as mums and babies can see each other, and should your baby become unsettled you are right next to them to feed, settle or comfort your baby.

Before commencing classes, you will need to undergo a FitRight initial assessment to assess your pelvic floor muscles, abdominal muscles and to set some exercise goals.

There are two class options: you can either choose to attend for a 20-30 minute routine of baby massage and developmental play (suitable for babies aged 2-6 months old) followed by a 60 minute exercise class, or you can attend for the exercise component only. During the Pilates-style exercise workout, babies are cared for by community volunteers.

The class level is beginner to intermediate, with the physiotherapist instructors able to adjust exercises for those who have issues such as abdominal muscle separation, pelvic floor dysfunction and joint pain to make it as challenging as possible for all participants while still being safe.

MumTime postnatal exercise classes are held in the evenings and are for mums only. Classes run for 60 minutes and feature Pilates-style exercises and pelvic floor friendly cardio workouts at an intermediate to advanced level.

As well as being a fun and safe way for mums and mums-to-be to exercise, FitRight classes are also a great way to meet new friends. With so many class options in locations throughout Perth, FitRight really is the right way to get fit!
