Fired! Ceramic Cafe in Joondalup is the perfect place for kids and adults to get creative and have fun painting ceramics in a relaxed environment. Although babies and toddlers are unlikely to have the skill or patience to paint, baby handprints, footprints and fingerprints can be used to make a creative keepsake. The cafe is air-conditioned and there is a play area with toys to keep the little ones amused while older kids and adults are painting. The toilet has a baby change table and there is a microwave available for customers to heat up baby food and drink bottles.

Bookings are not always necessary but are recommended to avoid disappointment, and highly encouraged during busy periods such as school holidays. You can book for two hours, and if the cafe is not fully booked you can stay longer if you need to. Most of the tables sit 4 people with a larger table capable of seating 8 people also available. Advise when booking if you need more space than this as tables can be rearranged and pushed together. High chairs are available and there is space for baby capsules and strollers. Tables can be booked to celebrate special events such as children’s birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers or is an option for a creative activity for a mothers group outing.
All paints and equipment are provided
There is a wide variety of unpainted ceramic pieces to choose from including mugs, pet bowls, plates, bowls, figurines, trinket boxes, seasonal Christmas ornaments, photo frames, cake stands, oil burners, egg cups and more. Prices are marked on the bottom of the ceramic and range from $20 to $65. There is no studio fee, so the price of the ceramic is the total cost of the finished piece including glazing and firing.
There is a large selection of ceramic pieces to choose from to paint
While you are painting your ceramic, staff will take orders for drinks and snacks. Both hot and cold drinks are available with a selection of coffee, babyccino, tea, hot chocolate, milkshakes, softdrinks, juice boxes and water. Some sweet treats are available including cookies and cupcakes.

When you arrive, staff will briefly explain how the paints work and provide technical and creative guidance if required. All necessary paints and equipment such as brushes, pencils and sponges are provided. If your artistic talents, like mine, are more aspirational rather than actual, stencils are available to create your design. You can draw your design in pencil first as pencil marks will not be visible after the item has been fired. Practise tiles are available if you want to try out different painting techniques with different brushes and sponges.
To achieve a solid colour, you will need to apply three coats of paint. For this reason it took the whole two-hour session for me to complete my piece, but could easily take less if you are more experienced or painting a smaller piece. You will need to leave your finished artwork at the cafe to be glazed and fired in the kiln to preserve the colours and bring out their vibrancy. Artwork can then be collected one week later and must be collected within three months.

Once a month an evening
paint in peace session is held for adults to indulge their artistic creativity. Workshops are held from time to time where a particular painting technique is demonstrated, or you will be shown how to decorate a particular type of ceramic piece.
Alternatively, ceramic painting parties can be held at your home with ceramics, paints and equipment provided. Takeaway painting kits are also available to hire. For a $50 deposit, you can take paint and paint brushes home and then only pay for the ceramic pieces which you will need to return to the cafe to be glazed and fired.
There is free parking at the front of the cafe or it is a 10 minute walk from Joondalup train station and Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City. The toilet has a baby change table and there is a microwave available for customers to heat up baby food and drink bottles.
