A child-friendly cafe serving gluten free, raw, vegan and vegetarian food.
Health Freak Café has opened in Cockburn Gateway Shopping City! With an intro like that, one might be mistaken for thinking I am some kind of Health Freak Café regular, but this was my first visit and I was thrilled to discover the new café is child friendly.
Given how packed the place was when I visited, it’s clear there is a need for Health Freak in the area. If you’re not familiar with the franchise, they specialise in gluten free, raw, vegan and vegetarian dining.
Health Freak Cockburn is located next to the Telstra Shop and opposite the Commonwealth Bank. It has a little play area for the kids with toys and books and a chalkboard. I didn’t have my toddler with me at the time of my visit, but I’m sure she would have loved to have a play.
I do admit that I was a bit out of my comfort zone when it came to paleo breakfasts, vegan breakfasts, keto breakfasts and high protein breakfast options. It was all a bit different from the bowl of breakfast cereal I usually eat. They also have a range of meals for children, known as “Little Freaks.”
I decided on the Coconut Breakfast Waffle, a ketogenic meal that is low carb. Despite the delicious sounding range of antioxidant enriching drinks, weight loss juices, detox juices, super food smoothies and protein shakes, I’m mother with an infant and toddler and run on caffeine, so opted for a skinny cappuccino to accompany my waffles.
I’ve never had Coconut Waffles before, but these were amazing – light and fluffy and topped with whipped coconut cream, strawberries and cinnamon and I had no trouble clearing my plate. For $12.95, it was good value and super filling too.
Even if you’re like myself and aren’t too familiar with the Health Freak menu, there’s certainly something for every taste, including breakfast favourites such as eggs on toast and granola (the Berry Nut Surprise) alongside the Protein Breakfast Burger and the high-protein Big Breakfast.
Lunch is served from 11:30am and also includes vegan and high protein meals, plus keto and paleo burgers. You’ll find Thai Beef Salad, Chickpea Spinach Quinoa Sweet Potato Curry and the Protein Mexican Beef Burger. Yum!
If you’re looking for a freak shake, look no further than the Cocofreak desserts and the loaded fresh shakes, which are packed with protein and lots of delicious goodies.
Health Freak also has franchises in Applecross, Floreat, Joondalup, Mount Lawley, Scarborough and Kings Park (at the bottom of Jacobs Ladder.) Even if you’re not a self-confessed “health freak” like me, it’s definitely worth a look for delicious, healthy food and nutritious snacks and drinks to keep you going for the day.
