Child-Friendly Dining At Haynes Bar and Grill

Long gone are the days when I used to get excited about a restaurant's cocktail list or the prospect of a parmi with ham – now, it’s all about the kids play area.

My daughter is two and the chances of her sitting politely through a lunch outing is simply impossible. This was our first visit to Haynes Bar and Grill in Armadale and even before we walked in I could see the top of some sort of cubby house peeking out over the wall. I held my breath….could it really be….an outdoor play area?? Yesssss!!



Perth restaurateurs and publicans are quickly wising up to what us parents want and Haynes has certainly catered for us folks with kids. The play area is enclosed, although it is close to the front door, so you will have to keep an eye on the kids to make sure they don’t make a dash for it.



There was no stopping my toddler. Luckily there were four adults in our party to take turns watching her play. The play area has a see saw, climbing logs, a chalk board (but no chalk, so bring your own) and of course, the cubby house.



It’s not a massive area, but it does the job of keeping the kids entertained while you wait for your lunch. The venue is relatively new and shiny, so it’s clean, modern and fresh.



We sat in the Sports Bar, mainly because it is closest to the play area – plus my husband had a clear view of the footy from our table, so he was happy. There is also a large alfresco area and a separate bistro area.

I had a quick look at the menu between supervising, and decided on the Beef and Guinness Pie. The lunch crowd had thinned out by the time we got there, so our meals were served very quickly.



Between our table we ordered the pie, the slow-cooked lamb shank, two serves of ribs and some chicken wings, plus drinks. My pie was served with chips and a side salad, and had a little bit of a spicy kick to it, which was delicious and not too overpowering.



The meals are generous in size and reasonably priced. The ribs are served with polenta sticks, which I couldn't get enough of, which was lucky as my husband didn't want them, while the shanks were doused in a delicious tomato sauce.



There is a kids menu, high chairs, lots of space to park a pram and change facilities.



All up we left happy with our lunch and somewhat relaxed, having avoided almost two hours of having to tell our toddler to stay seated. Us parents are always appreciative of that.
