Child-Friendly Shopping at Cockburn Gateway Shopping City

This southern suburbs shopping centre has some great features for parents who are shopping with children.

Iíve made no secret of the fact I strongly dislike taking my children shopping. If I do have to, however, I like to shop somewhere that is child-friendly so that we can break up the monotony of shopping with a play and child-friendly activities.

Having lived within a 5 minute walk of Cockburn Gateways Shopping City in Success for 5 years, I am a big fan of the centre for its child-friendliness. Here are some of the reasons it is appealing for parents.

Family events at the Piazza

Since undergoing a huge redevelopment a few years ago, Cockburn Gateways now boasts a great outdoor space known as the Piazza. This area is located among the restaurants and regularly features live entertainment, family activities and fun for the kids.

In 2019, for example, the Piazza hosted several Perth Fringe World events, including some fun events aimed at children. You can often find live music, roaming entertainment, bouncy castles and more.

While itís not a huge playground, the shopping centre has a small rope-based play structure for the kids just next to the Piazza. Itís is great for climbing, and will keep them entertained for a little while.

Just outside the restaurants in the Piazza is a water play area, which operates during the warmer months. Bring a towel and a change of clothes and watch as the kids zip in and out of the water streams and jets and cool down on those hot days.

Kids Club

The Cockburn Gateways Kids Club is free to join and provides you and the kids with exclusive news, promotions and event invitations.

Parents Rooms

Cockburn Gateways has two dedicated parents rooms. One is located near Miss Maudís cafe, and the other is located next to Jim Kidd Sports. The room closest to Miss Maud has private feeding rooms, change tables, a microwave and a childrenís toilet. The one closest to Jim Kidd Sports has one private feeding room, a toilet, microwave and change table. You can also access to this parents room, and other toilets, from the outdoor dining area.

The toilets next to the child-friendly Freak Cafe also have change tables.

School holiday activities

Cockburn Gateways offers school holiday activities at just about every break from school. They are usually themed around the latest trends, movies and TV shows and include fun activities, things to see and even meet and greets with your favourite characters. Sign up for the Kids Club for your children and they can be the first to hear about the latest holiday activities!

Wiggly Toes Creche

If you would prefer to go shopping without the kids, Cockburn Gateways has a Wiggly Toes Creche. You can drop the kids off for a play while you shop or enjoy a coffee in piece!

Kidsí stores

Gateways doesnít have a huge range of stores specifically for children, but with Ollieís Place, Cotton on Kids, Best and Less, Target and Big W, you can find the majority of whatever you need. The centre also has a Jim Kidd Sports for all the kidsí sporting equipment, plus EB Games for little gaming fans.

Close to public transport

If you live close to the Mandurah train line, you could always hop on the train with the kids and visit Cockburn Gateways! The train station is a short walk to the centre, or you can catch a bus that will drop you right outside the centre.
