Champs at Play, Kelmscott

A small, south-eastern suburbs play centre with lots to do for the little ones and good coffee.

Champs at Play is a play centre in Kelmscott that has plenty for little kids to do.

It may not be as flashy as some of the bigger play centres, or have a giant play structure, but it is good value, serves great coffee and is the kids have fun. What more can you ask for?

Champs at Play is located in the Champion Lakes Christian Church Building. It has a large cafe and rest area, a separate room for school holiday activities and a designated baby area, plus a toddler area.

My two daughters, aged 2 and 4, had a lot of fun whizzing around the above-ground bike track, which is located within the multi level play structure. It’s fully fenced off and gives the kids views of the play centre as they zoom around. There are bikes that are suitable for younger children, such as my 2-year-old.

In the play structure, there are plenty of padded surfaces, rope ladders to climb, tunnels and steps, plus a ball pit and slides. There are video games to play for older kids aged 8 and over.

The toddler area has a ball pit, padded surfaces, Little Tikes style housing and small slide. If you can’t find your children, be sure to check the trampoline or bouncy castle.

The baby area is suitable for children aged under 2. It is fully fenced, so the babies not only can’t escape, but the bigger kids can’t get in. There are endless toys to play with, so don’t worry about your little one getting bored. This section even has a little climbing structure for older babies.

The cafe serves a range of hot and cold drinks, plus small meals and snacks. There are cakes, muffins and slices to choose from, or you can pick from the menu, which also has a selection of kids’ meals.

There are plenty of places to sit, although the seats closest to the play structure get snapped up first (don’t they always?) There is also lots of space to park the pram.

The opening hours are limited during school terms, with the centre open 9am to 2pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays. It is closed from Sunday to Tuesday.

During school holidays, however, Champs is open Monday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm. The cost of entry during school holidays also includes a fun activity!

The entry fees are as follows:
Weekdays during school term:
Ages 0-1 $1
Ages 1-4 $7.50
Ages 5-12 $9

Weekends/school holidays/public holidays:
Ages 0-1 $1
Ages 1-4 $8.50
Ages 5-12 $11

Like the majority of play centres, Champs at Play can host a birthday party in one of their themed party rooms. Party packages include a dedicated host and unlimited play.

Champs at Play is a great little play centre, with preschoolers and young school children probably getting the most fun out of their time there. If you’d like to read about some other play centres around Perth, read on here.
