After five months at home figuring out how on earth to look after the small human I created, I thought it was time to a) get out of the house and b) work off the food that I’ve been devouring since breastfeeding turned me into a constantly starving version of my former self.
I started scoping out options in my area, and came across BUF Bayswater on Instagram. BUF is the brainchild of Libby Babet, the new trainer on this years’ The Biggest Loser. BUF promote themselves as delivering fun and dynamic outdoor group workouts for women that have a strong focus on the positive ‘feelings’ of fitness rather than ‘aesthetics’. Their catch phrase is “fitness that makes you feel Beautiful, Unstoppable and totally Fearless, aka BUF”. Considering I’ve been feeling about as beautiful and unstoppable as a sedated donkey (thanks four month sleep regression) I thought I’d try and get to a session. I finally decided to do it when BUF Bayswater advertised that they now provide babysitters so those with kids can bring them along too.

When I arrived, I was happy to see a really cute little kids area set up with play mats, toys and games for different ages from babies through to toddlers. This is also right out the front of the sports clubrooms (so theres an option to have kids playing indoors in the carpeted hall), and next to a playground (one of the ones with rubber ground, so no sand coming home in shoes and pockets!) which is great for older kids. There were two babysitters available, and considering there were four kids, I was completely confident that my little Ollie would be fine. The best part though, was that this kids area was literally ten metres away from where the actual workout was, so I could easily keep an eye on him. One of the babysitters approached me straight away to meet Ollie, and to check whether he was sitting/rolling yet (no) and whether he was a fan of tummy time (oh hell no).
I chatted to BUF Bayswater owner and trainer Renee before we kicked off and she asked me all the usual questions regarding where I am at in terms of fitness and explained that whilst BUF is about having some fun with fitness by no means does that mean I will love her at the end of the workout! After giggling at the expression on my face, Renee explained that in all seriousness, she is really conscious of the fact that everyone has different levels of fitness and abilities, and for that reason she offers different options or alternatives as needed. This might include different sized weights, different strength therabands, or offering alternative exercises.
Our workout ran for 45 minutes and included whole body toning exercises (using dumbbells, therabands and body weight movements), cardio intervals and a physical challenge to finish with. Renee changes workouts fortnightly in order to help keep things fun and interesting. The class was only small, which meant I got a pretty personalised workout, with Renee checking in on me with some of the core-focused exercises and giving me options if it was getting too much. It felt more like a PT session than the bootcamp style of workout that I was expecting.

At times the kids would wander over to the mums to check things out, and Renee is completely fine with this - she actually encourages their curiosity, and Renee’s son is one of the kids in the group too. At one stage, one of the toddlers wandered over, so her mum grabbed her and started squatting with her in her arms. Towards the end of the workout I could hear Ollie giving one of the babysitters a bit of grief, so I just popped him on a yoga mat next to me and let him watch the workout. So while I did get some ‘me’ time, it also takes away that element of worrying about whether your little one is ok, which can be really distracting.

What I really liked about BUF, and what will make me return, is that it’s got a fun and friendly vibe, was a great workout, and you can tell the trainer really knows her stuff. On top of that, Renee did mention a few other services BUF Bayswater offers that sounded interesting (like at home workouts, nutrition programs and private group training). Plus, she hinted at some things in the pipeline for BUF Girls nationally, like a published recipe book and ‘EnterTRAINment tour’ set for later in the year.
BUF is a great option for those wanting to branch away from the typical indoor gym-style workout and have a bit of fun with fitness. Renee did however explain that BUF is not designed for Mums requiring post-natal focused attention (i.e. rehabilitation) but did happily recommend some services in the area that offered this. With babysitters provided, it made it so much easier for me to commit and stop putting exercise off. Did I roll over in bed the next morning and feel my legs stiffen? Absolutely. But did I also meet a group of awesome ladies and manage to tire my little one out in the fresh air? You betcha.
